The freezing turned out to have two components: Power supply issues (random freezes not covered here) and Bootable CD driver issues (repeatable, consistent freezes discussed herein). What got me started on all this testing and research was a freezing problem with a new Pioneer DVR-110D DVD±RW drive, installed in a Beige G3 DT (desktop, non-tower) Mac.
